New Cameras in Southgate Won't Lead to Safer Streets

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 3rd Apr 2006

On the surface the installation of two CCTV cameras in Southgate Circus and Chase Side looks like good news for everyone.

But the Lib Dem Focus team have discovered that the cameras will be used primarily to catch traffic offenders with fines of up to £80. This will come as a disappointment to many residents and traders who had hoped the cameras would be used in the fight against street crime and anti-social behaviour.

Local Lib Dem spokesperson, Anthony Kila, stated that "while we welcome the introduction of cameras in Southgate, it seems they will not be used to make this area safer.

"Lib Dem policy supports the immediate introduction of a fully staffed and visible Safer Neighbourhood police team throughout Southgate, including Highlands Village, as the best way to combat casual vandalism and robberies which have blighted our local streets."
